Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art whose central theme is the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that force him/her to submit. Due to the fact that control is generally easier on the ground than in a standing position, much of the technique of BJJ is centred around the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for dominant control positions from where the opponent can be rendered harmless.
St.Catharines BJJ is the best program in Niagara because of the knowledge and experience all of our coaches have. Our head professor Vince Mattei is a long time black belt graded by Carlos Gracie Jr. We also have 3 other black belt coaches all graded under professor Vince himself. We have an outstanding kids program with multiple IBJJF tournament wins as well as a great adult program.
We are located on 55 St.Paul Street W. on the far left unit of the plaza. We are a 5 minute walk from downtown St.Catharines, 15 minute drive from Brock University, and about 5 minutes away from the highway. The St.Catharines city transit bus stop is right across from our gym (route 315/415)
St.Catharines BJJ welcomes everyone to train. No matter what age, size, or gender. For the younger ones, we do offer a youth BJJ class right before adult class. Women are also more than welcome to join the adult classes, we are adding a women's only class in the future so stay tuned for that.
You can always start training with us by contacting us through our social media, email, phone number, or here on our website. We offer a free one week trial to start you off, then our memberships are monthly with no contracts or commitments.
BJJ is practiced with a gi, a gi is the uniform you will have to wear while training. For your first few classes, we will provide you with an appropriately sized gi, after that you will need to purchase one yourself (there are cheap options). Underneath we ask you to wear dry-fit or workout clothes so it's easy for you to put the gi on.
